OUR MISSION

At Roots to Shoots, our mission is to reimagine traditional landscapes as living, regenerative spaces that nourish both people and place. We transform lawns and ornamental yards into vibrant, sustainable gardens that deepen your connection to the outdoors and enrich your everyday life.

In a dry climate like ours, water stewardship is essential. We design with conservation in mind — selecting climate-adapted plants, improving soil health to retain moisture, and implementing efficient irrigation strategies that dramatically reduce water use. Thoughtful water management allows your landscape to flourish while honoring one of our most precious resources.

We thoughtfully incorporate edible and medicinal plants so your landscape is not only beautiful, but functional and nourishing. By working with nature instead of against it, we eliminate harmful chemicals and rely on ecological principles for pest management and soil fertility. The result is a garden that more naturally sustains itself — and sustains you.

By increasing native plants and creating natural habitats, we design landscapes that truly belong here. These spaces welcome life back into your yard — whether it’s a sprawling property or a small balcony — and restore the natural balance that allows ecosystems to thrive.

We believe in the quiet, transformative power of nature: dirt therapy for the mind, fresh food for the body, and stewardship of the land for the soul. When we conserve water, grow food, support pollinators, and care for the land responsibly, we create healthier families, stronger communities, and a more resilient planet.

What's with the name?

Roots to Shoots is named in honor of the stewards of this land who came before us- our parents and grandparents, and most importantly, the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this place for thousands of years. They live in deep relationship with the Earth, tending it with intention, conserving its resources, and honoring its natural cycles.

We recognize that this land carries history, wisdom, and responsibility. In that spirit, we are committed to practices that restore and protect it- conserving water, planting native and climate-appropriate species, nurturing healthy soil, and working with the rhythms of nature rather than against them.

We honor traditional Indigenous knowledge while also embracing modern science that deepens our understanding of ecosystems and sustainability. By blending time-tested practices with current research, we continue learning how to care for the land more thoughtfully and effectively.

Our mission is not only to steward the land today, but to pass on knowledge, skills, and reverence to the next generation. We believe restoration begins with relationships, and that each of us has a role to play in helping return balance to Mother Earth.

About Roots to Shoots

Meet Heather

When people who knew my dad learn that I’m a gardener, they often smile and say, “Just like your dad.” There’s no greater compliment. It was a gift to learn from him, to build on what he taught me, and now to pass that knowledge on.

Some of my favorite memories are of eating sun-warmed fruit straight from our backyard. At the time, I didn’t realize what a privilege that was. My parents’ simple decision to plant fruit trees and berry bushes shaped my life in ways far deeper than a fresh snack. They cultivated in me a love of homegrown food, a sense of stewardship for the land, and an understanding that what we plant today can bless generations.

That foundation guides everything I do. I feel a responsibility to conserve water, to create habitat for pollinators, and to work with nature rather than against it. There is something profoundly therapeutic about watching the seasons unfold in your own yard. For me, gardening is therapy for the mind, healing for the body, and connection for the soul.

We have the opportunity — and the responsibility — to give these experiences to our children: to nurture their curiosity, their resilience, and their love for the natural world. My hope is to help others discover the beauty, abundance, and meaning that a simple backyard garden can bring.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
